Dear Harry Styles 2021 – 2022
Performative writing with site-specific action
In 2020, I got my heart broken. I sank into depression and lost interest in sex and in connecting with others romantically. At the time, singer Harry Styles was at the height of his fame, and I developed a parasocial infatuation with him. I sent him a love letter. When he didn’t respond, I printed it as posters, flew to London, and pasted them across the city and near his house. I researched background information on Harry Styles: his favourite cocktail, what he smells like, his favourite author, etc. It was easy because he is such a public figure. In the letter, I merged these details with my emotional distress, my inability to masturbate, my mother, and my thoughts on love.
